About the event

Berlin once again witnessed a gathering of Afghan intellectuals and activists as the second National Dialogue (Mili Maraka) meeting was held, hosted by the Afghanistan Peace Committee under the banner “Berlin Connects the Afghan Diaspora”, with more than 60 academic, political and social figures in attendance.

The meeting opened with remarks by Dr. Gul Rahim Safi emphasising dialogue, tolerance and social justice as the foundations of lasting peace, and its three main themes — national dialogue, social justice and the culture of tolerance — reflected the pressing needs of Afghan society today.

In the first part, Khairullah Seraj reviewed the path travelled and the future plans of the National Dialogue, a process aimed at building bridges among Afghans at home and abroad; in the second, Ms. Mina Jawad, under the theme “peace is not possible without justice”, highlighted the role of women's rights in development and lasting stability, with a joint panel featuring Ms. Mehria Ashufta and Ms. Fereshta Hussain deepening the discussion.

The third part featured a talk by Ibrahim Hotak on the culture of dialogue, tolerance and mutual acceptance, followed by analytical workshops moderated by Alam Gul Sahar, Wahid Tokhi Halimyar, Dr. Abdul Azim Noorbakhsh and Ibrahim Hotak, which produced a roadmap across short-, medium- and long-term horizons.

Participants expressed grave concern over the bans on girls' education, describing the past five years of restrictions as a great injustice against Afghan girls and an irreparable loss to the national interest; they pledged to raise the voice of Afghan girls and fight this injustice, and it was decided to launch a national campaign from the meeting under the slogan “Let Afghan Girls Go to School!”.

The meeting — a continuation of the earlier National Dialogue gatherings held over the past year in London, Berlin, Sacramento, Cologne, Birmingham, Hamburg, Toronto, Walsall and Frankfurt — showed that the Afghan diaspora, despite its geographic dispersion, can still play a meaningful role on the path to peace, justice and national unity.
