About the event

Following the series of National Dialogue meetings across Europe, America and Australia, the twelfth meeting of the process was held on 9 May 2026 in Dormagen, Germany, attended by a large number of Afghan academic, social and cultural figures from across Germany; the meeting was hosted by the Afghan Cultural Association of Dormagen and moderated by Ms. Mozhda Ahmadi, opening with a Quran recitation by Mr. Khalid Yusufzai and the national anthem.

Key points of the meeting were that the National Dialogue is preparing for the first national jirga of Afghans abroad in the near future; that dialogue, tolerance and mutual acceptance are the first step towards peace and national unity; that silence in the face of injustice against women is itself an injustice; and that jirgas should be sent to Afghanistan to help resolve national problems and lift the restrictions on girls' education.

Mr. Saeedullah Safi, head of the Afghan Cultural Association of Dormagen, stressed unity among Afghans and correcting Afghanistan's negative image abroad; Dr. Abdul Jabbar Jabarkhel, head of the Cologne branch, described the National Dialogue as an independent, non-political, people-supported movement for the free exchange of ideas and joint solutions; and Dr. Khushal Rohi, head of the facilitation committee, explained its goals, principles and next steps, confirming preparations for the first national jirga of Afghans abroad.

The main analytical discussions took place in three sessions moderated by Dr. Maryam Malikzada, Ustad Fahim Sadat and Ms. Sonia Ahmadi, covering pathways to peace, stability and national unity; justice, fundamental rights and the rule of law; and the problems, needs, capacities and avenues of convergence for Afghans abroad.

Participants' key contributions included: the National Dialogue is a movement born of society itself that should spread across Afghanistan and the world; expressing sorrow over girls' exclusion from education is not enough — everyone, especially men, must raise their voices, for silence before oppression is a great injustice; illiteracy is a root cause of Afghanistan's crises and combating it must be a national priority; all change must come through peaceful means, as war is no solution; without justice there is no peace, stability or national unity, and without the rule of law justice cannot be realised; foreign interference has sown division, but it is Afghans' responsibility to answer it with unity; and the diaspora's academic, professional and economic capacities should serve the country, with close coordination among Afghan associations abroad.

At the close, participants declared their support for the National Dialogue's efforts, pledged continued engagement and called for the movement's further expansion so that the shared voice of Afghans becomes a national and effective force.
