About the event

The first consultative meeting of the Afghan National Dialogue, initiated by the Mehwar-e-Milli party of Afghanistan, was held in person in London on Sunday 23 February 2025, with broad participation of Afghans living in the UK — including community elders, politicians, civil society activists and media representatives — to examine Afghanistan's current crisis, analyse its causes and explore solutions.

Participants stressed the need for dialogue among all segments of society, supported the promotion of democratic values and the nation's role in choosing its leaders, and backed a system founded on the rule of law, social justice and the principles of Islam.

Rejecting the politics of exclusion, they called for a broad umbrella under which all ethnic groups, communities and viewpoints can take part in building a united and stable Afghanistan, and highlighted the key roles of religious scholars, mosques, political parties and civil society, as well as of women, youth, education and the rule of law.

It was decided to form an interim secretariat of five to nine members to coordinate the National Dialogue and facilitate the talks, and to establish a website, email and other communication channels to connect participants and supporters.

Participants emphasised that future meetings should be held in different countries around the world and inside Afghanistan so that all Afghans can take part, and the meeting closed with a recitation from the Holy Quran and a prayer.
